Date
The letter must have been written shortly before Theo and Jo’s departure for the Netherlands on 15 July; Vincent hopes, after all, that they will have ‘really happy days’ together (l. 44). He writes that he is ‘wholly absorbed’ in painting ‘the vast expanse of wheatfields’. He writes the same to Theo and Jo in letter 898 of about Thursday, 10 July; in that letter he also says that he intends to reply ‘shortly’ (ll. 86-87) to the letters he received that day from his mother and Willemien. For these reasons we have dated the present letter to some time between about Thursday, 10 and Monday, 14 July 1890.
