Vincent’s mention of ‘the exhibition’ no doubt refers to the annual Salon in Paris, which was held from 1 May until mid-July. In 1889 the World Exhibition would also be starting in May, on the 5th. He assumed that Theo would be going to the Netherlands earlier this year, because of his intended marriage to
Jo Bonger; evidently Theo had told him that he wanted to marry before the exhibition opened (the marriage took place on 18 April).
