Lettercard (one 2½-cent, two 5-cent stamps). Postmarks: ‘NUENEN 8-12 V 17 JANV 84’, ‘ARRAS A P[x] / 18 JANV 84’ and ‘PARIS 3 (09) 3 / 8E. 18 JANV 84’. The address reads: ‘Monsieur Th van Gogh/ Maison Goupil & Cie/ B Montmartre/ Paris’.

Vincent wrote two letters to Paris, one shortly after the other, on the same day: one to Theo’s work address and one to his home (letters 423 and 424 respectively). We have reversed the order in respect of De brieven 1990, because in the present letter we read: ‘I’m writing to your rue de Laval address by the same post’, which would seem to indicate that he had not yet done so. In De brieven 1990 this letter was marked as not having been published before; this is incorrect; it has been known since the 1914 edition, under number 352.

Beste broer,

Er is iets gebeurd met Moe – Moe heeft bij ’t uitstappen van den trein haar been bezeerd.

Pa zegt de dokter1 zeide het een bepaalde breuk was.–

En wel digt bij ’t bekken, aan den grooten draaijer.a

Ik was bij ’t zetten, wat betrekkelijk medeviel, zoo dat ik haast zou denken ’t meer een ontwrichting is.

De dokter verzekert er geen bepaald gevaar is doch dat het gegeven Moe’s leeftijd2 lang duren zal.–

Ik wou ’t U liever in eens zeggen zoo als ’t was, meenende gij dit het liefst hebt.

Maar ik geef U mijn woord er op ’t niet erger is dan ik U schrijf. Ik zal U iederen dag voorloopig berigt zenden. Ik schrijf met zelfden post naar Uw adres Rue de Laval opdat gij het zoudt weten zoo dra mogelijk, ’t zij ge ’t huis, ’t zij ge in de zaak zijt.

Morgen als de dokter er zal zijn geweest schrijf ik op nieuw.– ’t Is wel een ramp.

Ik was bij een boer aan ’t schilderen en werd gehaald. Moe ligt nu rustig. adieu kerel, met een handdruk.

My dear brother,

Something has happened to Ma. Ma hurt her leg getting out of the train.

Pa says the doctor1 said it was definitely a fracture.

And close to the pelvis, in the head of the femur.

I was there when it was set, which went relatively well, so that I almost dare think that it’s more probably a dislocation.

The doctor assures us that there’s no particular danger, but that given Ma’s age2 it will take a long time.

I wanted to tell you right away how it was, believing that you would prefer it.

But I give you my word that it’s no worse than I say. For the time being I’ll write to you every day. I’m writing to your rue de Laval address by the same post so that you’ll know as soon as possible, whether you’re at home or you’re in the office.

I’ll write again tomorrow once the doctor has been. It’s a real disaster.

I was painting at a peasant’s, and was sent for. Ma is resting quietly now. Adieu, old chap, with a handshake.

a. The head of the femur is the name for that part of the thighbone that rotates in the hip socket.
