Date
Van Gogh left for Utrecht to see Van Rappard on the morning of Thursday, 20 December 1883 (FR b2250). He discusses this visit in the present letter – he writes: ‘spent a day with Rappard’ (l. 12). This form of words would appear to indicate that the letter was not written on that same day. He also says that he has meanwhile seen and spoken to Sien, and gives Theo his temporary address – he only intended to stay for a few days (FR b2250), so it would not have made sense for him to give Theo this address unless he did it at the beginning of his stay. In view of this and assuming that he was back in Nuenen on Christmas Day (cf. letter 417), we have dated the letter Friday, 21 December 1883.
Additional
There is a short laundry list written in pencil (probably in Theo’s handwriting) on p. [1r:4]. There is a similar list on the back of letter 567.
